Yesterday, the White House website featured a graphic with the flags of the three countries he’s visiting on his trip — Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia. One problem: instead of displaying the Vietnamese flag, the White House graphic featured the old flag of South Vietnam. That flag hasn’t been the official flag of Vietnam since South Vietnam surrendered to North Vietnam in 1975.

Yet either Boehner, Blunt or both are expected to be returned to their leadership posts Friday. For good reason, the GOP often is called "the stupid party."

Eric Cantor, a 43-year-old third-term congressman from Richmond who has been his party's chief deputy whip for four years since being appointed by Blunt after only two years in the House. At the same time, Cantor is well regarded in all sectors of the party, and members see him as the principled kind of rising politician that Republicans desperately need.

But Cantor is not seizing this post-election moment to seek an elected leadership position. On the contrary, he has been supporting Blunt for reelection as whip out of loyalty to his mentor and patron. Bright and able though he is, Cantor has drunk the Kool-Aid in viewing the Republican Party as a private club where personal loyalties must transcend all else.

Jim Webb's squeaker win over incumbent Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record) gave Democrats their 51st seat in the Senate, an astonishing turnabout at the hands of voters unhappy with Republican scandal and unabated violence in Iraq. Allen was the sixth Republican incumbent senator defeated in Tuesday's elections.

The Senate had teetered at 50 Democrats, 49 Republicans for most of Wednesday, with Virginia hanging in the balance. Webb's victory ended Republican hopes of eking out a 50-50 split, with Vice President Dick Cheney wielding tie-breaking authority.

It would've been nice if Harold Ford had won in Tennessee, thus assuring a 52-48 balance and pretty much making Joe Lieberman irrelevant, but that was not to be. As it stands, the party breakdown is:

Crist in Karl Rove's doghouse

The controversy over Charlie Crist dissing President Bush won't go away. White House political adviser Karl Rove made it clear he wasn't happy with Crist's decision to snub President Bush's Pensacola visit, thus likely ensuring that the controversy will be the talk of cable TV pundit shows Monday night.

Rove pointedly asked what event Crist was at that would rival the expected crowd of 10,000 at the president's election-eve event.

Crist was working the crowd at a popular Delray Beach restaurant, Lox Around the Clock, when he was asked about Rove's criticism.

"We just wanted to be all around the state of Florida today," Crist said. "I'm very pleased that the president is here. Glad he's come to our state. But I've got to get around Florida."

Crist is hitting eight events in six TV markets. The goal of his strategists is to get his face on as many evening newscasts as possible. But as he waved signs at a Fort Lauderdale intersection, TV reporters from Miami stations kept asking about the president's visit.

One reporter asked Crist is he's still supporting President Bush. "Of course I am," Crist said. "I think he's a great man and a great friend."

FORT WAYNE, Ind., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A Republican congressman in Indiana complains that telemarketers calling voters on his behalf have such heavy foreign accents they cannot be understood.

Rep. Mark Souder told the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette that in one call left on his daughter's answering machine, the only word he could understand was "Hayhurst" -- the name of his Democratic opponent, Tom Hayhurst.

Feather Larson & Synhorst -- a St. Paul, Minn., company hired by many Republican groups around the country -- promises calls with neutral accents. But in Indiana, where automatic telemarketing calls are illegal, the company is forced to use live callers -- and many of them apparently have heavy foreign accents.

Ironically, the message was to oppose Hayhurst's position on immigration.

The calls are funded by the National Republican Congressional Committee, which, the newspaper said, is the largest user of telemarketing techniques.

Souder, who claims he does not approve of telemarketing in politics, has asked the Indiana attorney general to cut the calls short.
